Meningococcal (ACWY) Vaccination Service
The Meningococcal (ACWY) Vaccine is available to Muslim Pilgrims through The Co-operative Pharmacy.
The Co-operative Pharmacy provides dedicated healthcare service for members of the Muslim community, part of this is by offering the meningococcal (ACWY) vaccination package to pilgrims travelling for Hajj and Umrah. The service is offered in partnership with Novartis Vaccines and The Muslim Council of Britain.
The meningococcal (ACWY) vaccine is a health requirement for individuals performing the Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca which able-bodied Muslims are expected to perform at least once in their lives.
In 2012, Hajj will take place in October and, as the vaccination is required before travel paperwork can be completed, we are urging people to prepare early.
Dr Shuja Shafi, Chair of the Health and Medical Committee, at the Muslim Council of Britain, has highlighted the benefits of the service: “We have supported The Co-operative Pharmacy’s Ramadan campaign for the last couple of years, so we are pleased to be working with Novartis Vaccines and The Co-operative Pharmacy to offer this new and essential service for Muslim pilgrims.
“Preparing for Hajj or Umrah can be costly but by launching this service with a transparent and fixed fee we hope to reduce the overall cost of obtaining the vaccination.”
If you require a vaccination, you need to obtain a voucher which entitles you to it for £35**. Vouchers can be obtained from local mosques, community centers and participating Co-operative Pharmacies. Visit the Muslim Council of Britain website for more information.
The Co-operative Pharmacy is also offering a Ramadan Medicines Use Review Service to Muslims who takes prescription medicines and are fasting during Ramadan. Our Pharmacists can also support those who are looking to stop smoking, through our Stop Smoking service.
*Please contact your local branch to check opening hours and Pharmacist availability.
**This includes the conjugated meningococcal ACWY vaccination, administration and a certificate.
